Keynotes

  • Professor Courtney Bell, University of Wisconsin - Are observations the gold standard of measuring teaching quality?  A review of the global research

Many believe that observations are the best way to capture the complexities and situated nature of teaching and learning. But are they the best?  And in what way?  How do we know? This talk will describe findings from a global literature review on measuring teaching quality with observations, artifacts, teacher surveys, and student surveys.  We will consider the reliability, validity, and utility of each measurement mode.  The talk is designed to help us think flexibly to consider and select a measurement mode that is aligned to our scholarly goals.

  • Professor Bridget Hamre, Teachstone, Inc. - From Observation to Transformation: Evidence, Implementation, and the Road Ahead

Rigorous observational research has identified the classroom interactions most predictive of child and adolescent thriving. The harder question is how to ensure more children actually experience them. This talk synthesizes lessons from research and from on-the-ground implementation about what it takes to design programs and policies that shift practice at scale. It closes with an update on emerging AI methods, including real-time observation tools, and their potential to reshape how the field supports educators.
