MOVIDA Project Launches to Explore AI in Contemporary Dance

A new research project, Movement and Virtual Intelligence for the Development and Accessibility of Artists and Audiences (MOVIDA), has launched at Tallinn University. The project is coordinated by the School of Digital Technologies (Associate Professor Nuno Correia), started on 1 April, and will run for three years.

MOVIDA

The  explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies can be applied in contemporary dance to support artistic development, engage audiences, and improve accessibility for people with disabilities and mental health challenges. The project will organise a range of activities for artists and audiences, including labs, residencies, showcases, forums, podcasts, and an online Knowledge & Tools Hub.

The consortium brings together 11 partners from five countries, combining expertise from dance, technology, and accessibility fields. It includes five dance centres, four academic institutions specialising in AI, and two organisations working in mental health and disability.

The dance centres are Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava (Estonia), Tanzhaus NRW (Germany), O Espaço do Tempo (Portugal), Centrul Național al Dansului București (Romania), and Antistatic (Bulgaria). The academic partners are Tallinn University, Hochschule Düsseldorf (Germany), Interactive Technologies Institute (Portugal), and the National University of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale” in Bucharest (Romania). The accessibility partners are Peaasi (Estonia) and Entuziart (Romania).

MOVIDA is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme with €1 million, covering 70% of the total project budget. The project builds on the recently completed MODINA project (2023–2026), which had a similar scope, duration, and coordination.
