Best of BFM Gala Honored the Most Outstanding Student Films
On June 11, the awards gala of the Best of BFM (BOB) Student Film Festival took place for the 13th time. The event celebrated the end of the academic year and recognized the creative achievements of talented students from the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School of Tallinn University.
Awards were presented in 17 categories during the gala evening. The iconic BOB trophies were awarded to the best documentaries, short films, fiction films, and dance films, as well as commercials, music videos, television stories, and creative bombs.
The evening’s standout success was the short film “Rattled Rapunzel”, which won awards for Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Director, and Best Actor. “Short films often face the challenge that they get made, but few people ever get to see them. We took a lot of risks by tackling a difficult subject, but the final result worked very well and was received warmly,” said Art Nõukas, who was awarded the title of Best Director. “What matters most to us is that audiences connected with “Rattled Rapunzel”,” he added.
For the first time, the festival also presented the Baby BOB Award, aimed at high school filmmakers from across the Baltics. The inaugural Baby BOB trophy went to “One Day or Day One”, a film by young filmmakers from the Kinomaja Film School. “The entire event was professional and impressive, and victory feels sweet,” said the film’s director and screenwriter, Säde Sibul.
The Best of BFM Student Film Festival took place from 16–24 May, offering audiences the opportunity to watch the latest works by students at Tallinn University’s SuperNova Cinema. The festival jury consisted of professionals from Estonia’s film industry, who evaluated the entries based on originality, technical execution, and artistic merit.
According to jury member and acclaimed film director Anna Hints, the judging process involved extremely difficult decisions, although it was thoroughly enjoyable. “It is wonderful that BOB gives visibility to the filmmakers emerging from this school. Art is always subjective. I created my own criteria for evaluation, but there were exceptionally strong works in categories such as screenwriting. I’m already looking forward to seeing what these filmmakers create next,” she said.
